Energy optimisation guide for Spanish homes

Electricity tariffs in Spain are calculated in time bands, and prices have risen in recent years. Adjusting your consumption to the cheapest hours, taking advantage of solar energy and improving your home’s efficiency not only lower your bill but also reduce emissions. This article compiles practical tips from official sources and consumer associations to optimise energy use at home.

1. Know your electricity time bands

Time‑of‑use tariffs divide the day into valley hours (lowest price), flat hours (intermediate) and peak hours (highest price). For customers with three time bands, peak hours are 10:00‑14:00 and 18:00‑22:00 Monday through Friday; flat hours are 08:00‑10:00, 14:00‑18:00 and 22:00‑00:00; valley hours cover 00:00‑08:00 on weekdays and all day on weekends and holidays.

Concentrate the use of high‑consumption appliances—washing machine, dishwasher or tumble dryer—during valley hours and avoid using them at peak times. A time‑of‑use tariff pays off if at least 30 % of consumption occurs in the valley period. The price during cheap hours can be half that of peak hours, yielding annual savings of more than €80.

2. Make the most of self‑consumption and solar hours

Installing solar panels is a worthwhile investment in Spain. IDAE notes that self‑consumption lets citizens generate 100 % renewable electricity and substantially reduce their bills while contributing to the energy transition. With around 300 sunny days a year, photovoltaic energy is abundant in Spain.

To maximise self‑consumption, identify your peak solar production hours—typically between 11:00 and 17:00. Carry out high‑consumption tasks (doing laundry, charging an electric car or ironing) during this period so you use the electricity as it is generated.

3. Efficient use of appliances and cooking

Household appliances account for more than half of a home’s electricity use, so efficient use is essential. IDAE recommends:

  • Fridge and freezer: Do not put hot food inside; set the temperature to 5 °C in the fridge and –18 °C in the freezer.
  • Washing machine and dishwasher: Use them when full and select eco or low‑temperature programmes.
  • Cooking: Prioritise the microwave and pressure cooker over the oven; avoid opening the oven unnecessarily.
  • Phantom consumption: Disconnect devices in standby using power strips; this can save about €52 per year.
  • Energy labelling: When replacing an appliance, choose models with energy class A or above.

4. Responsible heating and cooling

Heating and air conditioning account for a large share of energy use. IDAE advises keeping the home at 21 °C during the day and turning off the heating at night; a change of 1 °C produces a 7 % energy saving. Install thermostatic valves or programmable thermostats to save between 8 % and 13 %. For cooling, a temperature of 26 °C or higher is sufficient.

5. Insulation and hot water

Good insulation significantly lowers a home’s energy demand. IDAE recommends investing in quality exterior enclosures and using double‑glazed windows. For domestic hot water, a shower uses up to four times less water and energy than a bath. Keep the water temperature between 30 °C and 35 °C and install flow reducers.

Conclusion

Optimising energy consumption in a Spanish home does not require major investments. Scheduling domestic tasks during valley hours and solar production hours, eliminating standby consumption, and using efficient appliances provide substantial savings and enhance comfort.
