Why do fuel prices vary so much?
In Spain, fuel prices are deregulated. While all fuel comes from the same national distribution network (Exolum), stations add different additives and apply widely different profit margins.
Independent "low-cost" stations (like Plenoil, Petroprix, or Ballenoil) often operate unstaffed automated sites, passing the operational savings directly to drivers. Premium branded stations charge more for loyalty schemes, staffed tills, and premium additives.
The €300 Difference
The average Spanish driver uses about 1,200 litres of fuel per year. A difference of just €0.25 per litre between your local premium station and a nearby low-cost alternative means handing over €300 per year more than you need to.
