How to Read a Spanish Business Electricity Bill

Business energy bills in Spain (especially the 3.0TD tariff) are notoriously difficult to decipher. Here is a line-by-line breakdown of exactly what you are paying for, and how to spot hidden penalties.

Anatomy of a 3.0TD Factura

Technical Details (Datos Técnicos)

Located usually on the first page or the back page. This defines your contract limits.

CUPS Number:A 20-22 character code starting with `ES`. This identifies your physical supply point. You need this to switch suppliers.
Potencia Contratada (Contracted Power):For a 3.0TD tariff, you will see 6 different kW values listed here (P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, P6).
Peaje de Acceso (Access Tariff):Should read `3.0TD` for >15kW, or `2.0TD` for <15kW.

Término de Potencia (Fixed Power Term)

Where businesses lose money: If you see very high identical kW values contracted across all 6 periods, you are likely overpaying. The P6 period (weekends/nights) is extremely cheap, but the P1 period is very expensive.

Término de Energía (Active Energy)

This is the actual electricity you consumed. You will see 6 different lines corresponding to the energy consumed in the 6 periods (P1 to P6), each multiplied by a different price per kWh.

Hidden Penalties & Excesses

Scan your bill closely for these two line items. If they exist, your bill is actively bleeding profit.

Facturación por Excesos de Potencia (Maximeter Penalties)

You exceeded your contracted kW limit in a specific period. The distributor has fined you for the spike. You must either lower your peak usage, or raise your contracted limit to stop the fines.

Penalización por Energía Reactiva (Reactive Energy Fines)

Your motors or refrigerators are throwing "dirty" power back onto the grid. Install a capacitor bank to eliminate this cost.

Are you overpaying for unused power?

Optimizing the 6 periods of a 3.0TD tariff is nearly impossible manually. Upload your bill and our experts will calculate if lowering your P1-P6 potencia will save you money, factoring in any potential maximeter penalties.
