When Do You Need an Electrical Certificate (CIE) in Spain?

The CIE — Certificado de Instalación Eléctrica, or "boletín eléctrico" — is not needed for every electricity account change. But in several common situations, it is mandatory.

Understanding when it is required helps you avoid surprises from your distributor and plan ahead for any property transaction or upgrade work.

Ofte Stilte Spørsmål

Does switching supplier always require a new CIE?

Not always. If your existing CIE is less than 20 years old, a supplier switch can usually go ahead without a new certificate. If it is older than 20 years, the distributor may request an updated one before accepting the switch.

What if my property has no CIE at all?

If no CIE exists — which can happen with very old rural properties or informal constructions — you will need a full inspection by an authorised electrician before the distributor will connect or reconnect the supply.

How long does a CIE inspection take?

For a standard residential property, the site visit typically lasts under an hour. The registration and distributor acceptance process takes a further few days to a couple of weeks.
